I saw Karate months ago here in Williamsburg and was very much impressed with them. A good friend and musical collaborator here in New York told me that I would love them and she wasn't lying. My point today is that I found a great quote that the lead singer/guitarist said in an interview. I think it really captures what being in a band should be all about. Music is an art form. It needs to be studied to fully understand it. The beauty of music is that the more you learn the better you are. The better you are the easier it is to enjoy your music, by yourself or with others. Whether it is in your performance or in your writing. Check these guys out if they come to your town. You can read the whole article at http://www.synthesis.net/music/feature.php?bid=671. (You have to copy and paste because blogspot is being as asshole to me today.)

"My personal style of writing is that I want to know exactly what I'm playing all the time, I want to know exactly what my options are. If I'm going to play something simple, it's because I choose to play it, not because it's the only thing that I'm capable of doing. It is something that's important to what we do - knowing the theory behind the harmony of a song, for example, allows us all to think about our options and gives us a broader palate to draw from. The way that I feel is that I want to make conscious choices about what I do musically. I hear people say things like, 'well, whatever sounds good,' but I don't believe in writing music that way. I think that's the easiest way to make music, but you'll never challenge your ear if you just play what comes easiest or whatever sounds good at first"

here is what I am looking for: A programmable simon game. I want a vintage simon game (you remember, with the four colored sections that beeped) that is modified to only play good flame tunes. this may sound tricky but I am sure it can be done. First step is to find a working simon. I will pay top dollar (well, I might pay shipping) for a simon player. the modifications could probably be figured out. I have some friends with soldering irons and a couple of extra transistors. So send me an email at assholewithastory at thegoodflame dot com and help me out!

The Good Flame would like to thank the whittler for the great review. Someday my friend, we will meet, drink beer, and chief tobias when he passes out.

"In England, Smokey the Bear is not the forest fire prevention representative. They have Smacky the Frog. It's just like a bear, but it's a frog. I think it's a better system, I think we should adopt it. Because bears can be mean, but frogs are always cool. Never has there been a frog hopping toward me, and I thought 'man, I'd better play dead. Here comes that frog ...' You never say here comes that frog in a nervous manner. It's always optimistic. Hey here comes that frog, all right. Maybe he'll come near me so I can pet him, and stick him in a mayonnaise jar, with a stick and a leaf, to recreate what he's used to. And I'm pretty sure I'd have to punch some holes in the lid, because he's damn sure used to air. Then I can observe him, and he won't be doing much in his 16-ounce world."
